Apple unveils latest upgrade: Smarter iPhones, iPads, and Macs coming soon

Get ready for a major upgrade to your Apple devices. Apple on Monday announced a suite of powerful new Apple Intelligence features designed to make your iPhone, iPad, and Mac even smarter, more personal, and easier to use. These exciting updates will start rolling out this fall for compatible devices.
Think of Apple Intelligence as a super-smart assistant built right into your Apple devices. It uses advanced artificial intelligence to help you with everything from writing emails to translating conversations on the fly.
What’s New and Exciting?
- Break Down Language Barriers with Live Translation: Travelling or chatting with friends overseas just got easier.
- Messages: Text messages can now be automatically translated as you type, and incoming messages are instantly translated into your preferred language.
- FaceTime & Phone Calls: You can see translated live captions during FaceTime calls, and even hear spoken translations during phone calls. Your conversations stay private because these translations happen directly on your device.
- Get Creative with Genmoji & Image Playground: Express yourself like never before.
- Genmoji: Beyond just creating emoji from text, you can now mix and match existing emoji with descriptions to make brand-new, unique Genmoji. You can even tweak expressions or hairstyles for Genmoji inspired by friends and family.
- Image Playground: This feature lets you create playful images, and now, it includes new styles like “oil painting” or “vector art” thanks to a special connection with ChatGPT. You’re always in control, and nothing is shared with ChatGPT without your permission.
- Smarter Visuals: Search and Act on Your Screen: Your iPhone can now understand what’s on its screen.
- You can ask ChatGPT questions about what you’re seeing in any app, or use Google or Etsy to find similar items just by highlighting something on your screen (like a cool lamp!).
- If your phone sees an event on your screen, it can even suggest adding it to your Calendar and fill in all the details automatically.
- Workout Buddy for Apple Watch: Your Apple Watch is getting a personal trainer.
- Workout Buddy uses your workout data and fitness history to give you personalised, motivating tips and insights during your exercise sessions, all in a dynamic voice inspired by Fitness+ trainers.
- Siri Gets Even Smarter: Expect a more natural and helpful Siri.
- Siri can now understand you better, even if you stumble over words, and remember context from previous requests. You can also type to Siri, and it has deeper knowledge about Apple products.
- Developers Get a Boost: Apple is giving app developers direct access to the Apple Intelligence technology, meaning even more smart features could be coming to your favourite apps soon.
- Shortcuts are Supercharged: Your custom shortcuts can now tap directly into Apple’s AI to perform intelligent actions, like summarising text or comparing notes.
- Everyday App Enhancements:
- Reminders: Can automatically identify important actions in emails or notes.
- Apple Wallet: Will summarise order tracking details from emails.
- Messages: Can now suggest polls in group chats and let you create unique chat backgrounds using Image Playground.
Privacy First: Apple emphasises that Apple Intelligence is built with privacy at its core. Many features run directly on your device. For tasks needing more power, Apple uses Private Cloud Compute, which extends the privacy and security of your device to the cloud, ensuring your data is never stored or shared with Apple. Independent experts can even check the code to confirm this privacy promise.
When Can You Get It? These Apple Intelligence features are being tested now and will be available to users with supported devices this fall. Initially, they’ll launch in English, with eight more languages (including Danish, Dutch, Chinese Traditional, and Turkish) coming by the end of the year.
“We think this will ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps users rely on every day,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
“We can’t wait to see what developers create.
