Dubai’s new ‘Hewi’ spaces explained: Why this neighbourhood concept is a big deal

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially inaugurated Hewi Nad Al Sheba, the first community space under the new Hewi Dubai initiative, and it’s designed to bring back something many modern cities have lost – genuine neighbourhood connection.

So, what is ‘Hewi’?
Hewi is an Emirati term for an outdoor space at home where families and neighbours naturally gather. Traditionally found in old fareej neighbourhoods, it’s a place for conversation, play, rest and shared daily life. Dubai is now reintroducing this concept in a modern, purpose-built way.

What is Hewi Nad Al Sheba?
Hewi Nad Al Sheba is the first of several community spaces planned across the city. Developed by Dubai Municipality in partnership with the Dubai Future Foundation and Ferjan Dubai, the project focuses on social bonding, well-being, and quality of life.

Who is it for?
Everyone. The space is designed for children, parents and senior citizens alike, offering safe play areas, calm seating zones, walking paths and flexible spaces for gatherings and events.

What makes it different?

  • Contemporary design inspired by traditional Emirati neighbourhoods
  • Native plants like sidr and tamarisk trees
  • Sustainable, locally sourced materials such as limestone and rammed earth
  • Minimal use of concrete and artificial turf

What’s inside the space?

  • Al Decha: A quiet gathering area near the mosque
  • Al Saaha: An indoor-outdoor space for community events and celebrations
  • Al Yalsa: Seating for parents overlooking the children’s play area
  • Walking paths that encourage movement and connection with nature

Why it matters
Hewi Dubai aims to strengthen social cohesion, preserve cultural identity, support local families and businesses, and create spaces where neighbours can truly connect.

At its core, Hewi Nad Al Sheba isn’t just a new public space; it’s a return to neighbourly living, designed for modern Dubai and aligned with the city’s vision for quality of life and community wellbeing.
