How and where to catch the Pink Moon over Dubai this Sunday

Skywatchers in the UAE are in for a treat this Sunday, April 13, as the Pink Moon, the first full moon of spring, lights up the night sky.

To mark the occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) is inviting the public to a magical desert gathering under the stars at Al Qudra. The special event promises an enchanting mix of science, culture, and storytelling.

What is the Pink Moon?

Despite its name, the Pink Moon won’t appear pink. The term comes from Native American traditions, named after the seasonal blooming of pink wildflowers, particularly Phlox subulata, one of the earliest spring blossoms in North America.

Astronomically, it’s just like any other full moon. But its symbolic link to the changing seasons and ancient traditions makes it a popular event around the world.

This year’s Pink Moon is a micromoon

According to DAG’s operations manager Khadijah Hasan Ahmed, this year’s full moon will also be a micromoon – meaning it will appear slightly smaller and dimmer in the sky.

“A micromoon happens when the moon is near its apogee – the farthest point in its orbit from Earth,” she explained. “It’s a subtle but charming phenomenon.”

When and where to see it

In Dubai, the Pink Moon will rise at around 7:08 pm on Sunday and set at 5:56 am the following morning. The best time to catch it is shortly after moonrise, when it appears larger and more dramatic near the horizon.

“You don’t need any special equipment to enjoy the view, though binoculars or a telescope can offer a closer look at the moon’s surface,” said Khadijah. “And for photography lovers, this is a perfect moment to capture the full moon rising over the desert dunes.”

Desert stargazing at Al Qudra

DAG’s Pink Moon celebration will take place from 6 pm to 9 pm at Al Qudra Desert and is open to all sky enthusiasts and families. The event includes:

  • Moonrise observation
  • Astrophotography session
  • Telescope viewing of the Pink Moon
  • A talk titled The Pink Moon – Myths, Meanings & the Micromoon
  • Stargazing and storytelling circle
  • Henna station, snacks and refreshments
  • A fun moon trivia session

Tickets are priced between Dh100 and Dh150, and pre-registration is required through the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre’s website or Dubai Astronomy Group.

“Bring your camera, your curiosity, and a sense of wonder,” said DAG. “This is a night for all ages to enjoy – a chance to connect with the cosmos and explore the magic of the moon in a uniquely cultural setting.”
