Iconic Filipino masterpiece Una Bulaquena by Juan Luna unveiled at Louvre Abu Dhabi

A historic cultural exchange between the UAE and the Philippines is now on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi. For the first time in the Arab world, Juan Luna’s iconic oil painting Una Bulaquena is on view, bringing Filipino heritage to the museum’s global audience.

The unveiling marks the first-ever collaboration between Louvre Abu Dhabi and the National Museum of the Philippines, a momentous step in strengthening ties between the two nations through art.

A National Treasure Goes Global

Painted in 1895 during the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, Una Bulaquena is more than a portrait; it’s a powerful expression of national identity. The artwork features a young woman from Bulacan, poised and dignified in traditional Filipino attire, radiating pride, elegance, and quiet defiance.

Declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2008, the painting rarely travels outside the Philippines. Its display in Abu Dhabi is a rare and significant cultural moment, made possible through a special loan by the National Museum.

“This exceptional painting celebrates Filipino identity while connecting with global themes of heritage and representation,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Louvre Abu Dhabi.

UAE and Philippines Strengthen Cultural Ties

The unveiling was attended by Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Alfonso A. Ver, Ambassador of the Philippines to the UAE and Jorell M. Legaspi, Deputy Director-General of the National Museum of the Philippines.

“The loan of Una Bulaqueña reflects our growing cultural partnership and shared commitment to dialogue through art,” said Ambassador Ver.

“It’s also a proud moment for thousands of Filipinos living in the UAE,” he added.

A Proud Addition to Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Global Collection

Now part of the permanent galleries, Una Bulaquena is displayed alongside works by Auguste Renoir and Edouard Manet, placing Luna’s Filipina subject in conversation with iconic European portraiture.

“This masterpiece brings Southeast Asia’s voice into our universal narrative,” said museum director Manuel Rabate.
