Pepsi pumps the brakes on carbon, uses nitrogen instead
If you have been a fan of Pepsi the way it’s always been, then it’s time to rethink your love.
That’s because the good old Brad’s Drink is now getting a whole new avatar.
In what is being billed as the company’s “most ambitious feat yet,” PepsiCo (PEP) has announced a first-of-its-kind nitrogen-infused cola. And it is said to be a creamier and smoother version of the traditional carbonated soda.
Called Nitro Pepsi, it is being released in the United States on March 28 and will come in regular and vanilla flavours.
In case you didn’t know, Nitrogen is more commonly used in beverages like beer and coffees. Starbucks’ wildly successful cold brews is an example where nitrogen creates a silky, foamy texture. But since those typically come out of taps, it had to be slightly different for Pepsi and so it had to come up with a way to maintain the nitrogen in a can. And that’s where the story is!
Pepsi’s nitro cola also produces a foamy head when opening the can. And so the company is even recommending a special way of drinking Nitro Pepsi: serve it without ice and DO NOT use the straw. (We suggest do away with the straw anyway!)
Nitro Pepsi, first announced in 2019, is aimed at attracting drinkers who don’t like carbonated drinks.
