Plastic bags behind 50% camel deaths in UAE

Fifty per cent of camel deaths in the UAE were caused after they consumed plastic bags, the Executive Council of Dubai revealed, while approving a policy to limit single-use bags by imposing a tariff of 25 fils, starting from July 1, 2022. The tariff will be implemented in all stores as well as restaurants, pharmacies, online and e-commerce deliveries across Dubai.
Back in the 90s, the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment had carried out a study which brought to the fore the fact that one in two camels died as it choked after swallowing plastic bags, the Executive Council said.
That’s not all. You will be shocked to know that 86 per cent of turtles died on the shores of the Emirate after consuming stuff made from plastics. Plastic bags are taking a heavy toll on the environment. They do not decompose for hundreds of years and contaminate the soil as well.
