Remembering our legends: A look at the icons from the acting, music and sports world that we lost this year

The entertainment world is reeling from the recent deaths of Hollywood star Val Kilmer and Bollywood icon Manoj Kumar, both of whom left an indelible mark on cinema. Kilmer, the Top Gun and Batman Forever star, passed away at 65 due to pneumonia, while Kumar, the legendary Bharat Kumar of Bollywood, died at 87 following a heart attack.

Their passing adds to a growing list of beloved actors, musicians, and filmmakers we have lost in 2025. From Oscar winners to music legends, here’s a look at the stars who bid us farewell this year.

Hollywood & Global Icons

  • Val Kilmer (65, Actor) – Top Gun legend succumbed to pneumonia.
  • Gene Hackman (95, Actor) – Two-time Oscar winner (The French Connection) died of heart disease.
  • Richard Chamberlain (90, Actor) – Dr. Kildare star passed just before his 91st birthday.

  • Roberta Flack (88, Singer)Killing Me Softly voice silenced.
  • Marianne Faithfull (78, Singer-Actress) – Music and film icon bids farewell.
  • Roy Ayers (84, Musician) – Jazz-funk pioneer (Everybody Loves the Sunshine).
  • Angie Stone (63, Singer) – Wish I Didn’t Miss You singer died in a car crash.
  • George Foreman (76, Boxer) – Heavyweight champion and entrepreneur passed away.

Bollywood & Indian Cinema

  • Manoj Kumar (87, Actor-Director) – “Bharat Kumar” of Bollywood (Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim) passed away due to a heart attack.
  • Pritish Nandy (77, Producer) – The mind behind Kaante and Four More Shots Please! died of cardiac arrest.
  • Deb Mukherjee (83, Actor-Filmmaker) – Part of the Mukherjee-Samarth family, known for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.
  • Rakesh Pandey (84, Actor) – The Sara Akash star suffered a fatal heart attack.
  • Arun Roy (56, filmmaker) – The Bengali director known for films like Hiralal and Bagha Jatin passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer and a severe lung infection. 
  • Other Losses: Uttam Mohanty (Odia actor), Yogesh Mahajan (TV actor), Sudip Pandey (Bhojpuri actor), Manoj Bharathiraja (Tamil actor), and Manoj Santoshi (screenwriter recognised for his work on the successful comedy show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai).
