UAE filmmaker Alwiya Thani’s dark comedy ‘Zamjara’ makes a spalsh at Santa Monica Film Festival

Emirati filmmaker Alwiya Thani made a major splash at the Santa Monica Film Festival with the premiere of her dark comedy ‘Zamjara’ on March 15, 2025. The film, which takes an unconventional look at a cancer patient’s journey, blends humour with the seriousness of illness.
The festival, now in its 20th edition, was held at the Directors Guild of America Theater Complex in West Hollywood, California. The hybrid format (in-person screenings and virtual screenings) allowed audiences worldwide to engage with independent films.
A Milestone for Emirati Cinema
Thani’s filmmaking journey has been closely tied to ImageNation Abu Dhabi, a company dedicated to promoting regional talent. As both a casting director and filmmaker, she represents the growth of the UAE’s film industry. The selection of ‘Zamjara’ at such a prestigious festival highlights the growing presence of Emirati filmmakers on the global stage.
As the movie gains attention, Thani’s work illustrates the power of storytelling. By combining humour with serious themes, the film both entertains and encourages reflection.
Thani took a bold leap from the banking industry to pursue her passion for media and entertainment — a decision that has shaped her career over the past 10 years. For the last six years, she has been an integral part of ImageNation Abu Dhabi, where she honed her skills through the Arab Film Studio (AFS) development programmes.
Her journey at ImageNation has seen her play a key role in developing and producing impactful films, contributing to the growth of the UAE’s thriving film industry.
