Eid festivities to begin Monday as UAE readies for long holiday

Eid Al Fitr festivities in UAE will officially begin from Monday, May 2. The UAE Moon Sighting Committee met on Saturday but failed to spot the crescent moon before declaring April 30 would be the last day of Ramadan, the ninth and the holiest month of the Islamic calender. Similar announcements were made by authorities in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain.

The private sector holiday was already announced as Ramadan 29 to Shawaal 3. This means that private sector workers in the UAE will be off until Wednesday May 4, and work will resume on Thursday May 5. The public sector and school holiday will last for five days, meaning a nine-day break for those with Saturday-Sunday weekends. Work will resume on Monday May 9 for the public sector and schools. Ahead of Eid, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Imams, preachers, and muezzins who have been serving in Dubai for over 20 years will be granted the UAE golden visa. The imams of mosques, preachers and muezzins will also be granted a financial bonus.

As the UAE gears up for Eid Al Fitr celebrations on Monday (May 2), citizens and residents need to be aware of the country’s latest Covid-19 protocols for the Islamic festival. Announced recently, worshippers have been advised to wear face masks and maintain social distancing norms while attending early morning Eid Al Fitr prayers. These protocols outline regulations for mosques and protocols for prayers, to celebrate in a safe environment.

As UAE is gering up for a 9 day long weekend, Emirates Airlines will operate 400 flights daily, during the Eid Al Fitr break from April 29 to May 9. On Saturday, May 7, Emirates will operate 411 flights – the highest number of daily flights yet – to accommodate the increasing number of travellers. Likewise,  Flydubai, aonther Dubai-based airline, is scheduled to operate more than 2,200 flights during the busy Eid Al Fitr break (between April 30 and May 8), a significant increase from the carrier’s regular scheduled operations.
