Veteran TV star Jeremy Clarkson calls Britain ‘doomed’, says Dubai looks like the better deal

TV star Jeremy Clarkson, best known for Top Gear and Clarkson’s Farm, has joked that he may swap the UK for sunnier shores, and Dubai is at the top of his list.

In a column for The Sunday Times, the 65-year-old motor journalist painted a grim picture of Britain’s future, blaming rising taxes, more crime, a sluggish economy, a frozen housing market, and weak policing.

The outspoken presenter says life in Britain feels increasingly grim, and what he describes as “a future filled with problems.”

“It’s easy to convince yourself that Britain has become a hopeless case, heading quickly toward a collapsed future,” Clarkson wrote, adding that he has started looking at options abroad.

Add in his own tough year on the farm, battling heatwaves, drought, and an outbreak of bovine tuberculosis that forced him to shut down for months, and Clarkson admits 2025 has been “the worst year ever.”

So, what makes Dubai tempting? Clarkson pointed to three big draws:

  • No income tax – keeping more of your money.
  • Cheap fuel – Dh2.58 a litre.
  • Efficient policing and year-round sunshine – a contrast to the gloomy weather he experiences back home.

He hasn’t made a move yet, but his remarks have stirred plenty of conversation, especially among expats who already see Dubai as a land of opportunity, lifestyle, and endless sunshine.

“I used to enjoy Dubai back in the early Nineties,” he revealed.

Whether Clarkson’s future is in Britain, Dubai, or beyond, one thing’s clear: The idea of trading rainy days for tax-free living is something many can relate to.
