29 adventurers, 640km and 13 days: A cultural trek on camel

If you’re feeling the midweek laze or fatigue coming over you (because we totally are) and are in dire need of some morning motivation today, we’ve got you covered. This incredible story of 29 adventurers on camels who travelled 640 kilometres across 13 days as part of a cultural trek is sure to give you that boost.

The 8th edition of the annual trek, organised by Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, saw participants from 21 countries coming together in a beautiful act of solidarity and teamwork to undertake the journey through the desert of the UAE.

Starting in Liwa’s empty quarter, the caravan forged ahead slowly but steadily and ended their trek at the Expo 2020, where they were welcomed warmly amidst cheers and applause from onlookers.

The trek is planned in detail, with participants being shortlisted from a pool of 300 applicants. The final team is required to be above 18 years of age and have a high level of fitness and endurance. This is to ensure that they will be able to safely train in the intensive camel riding programme provided by the centre.

The journey itself follows an established route marked by rest stops and camping stations throughout. An exercise in preserving and protecting an age-old Emirati tradition, this trek is also considered an effort towards promoting tolerance, coexistence and a connection among cultures.

On the final day of the trek, the weary travellers, having braved the forces of nature, were paid a visit by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai. He lauded their efforts and sent them ahead to complete their journey.

An avid reader and writer, Manaal is known for her passion for telling stories. This passion results in her reading everywhere, on the metro, bus, and even in her dreams. In the rare instance, she isn't absorbed in a book, she can be found cuddling with cats, sleeping, and collecting an obscene amount of shoes.
