AI threat or opportunity? Sharjah Forum to put spotlight on journalism’s future

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way news is created, raising big questions about the future of journalism jobs. This issue will take centre stage at the 14th International Government Communication Forum (IGCF 2025), set for September 10–11 at Expo Centre Sharjah.
Sharjah Press Club, an affiliate of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, will lead discussions on how automation and AI are reshaping newsrooms, workflows, and the skills journalists need to stay relevant.
The headline debate, “Journalism and AI: Humans or Machines?”, will confront the growing reliance on AI-generated content. Experts, including Dr Hossam Al Najjar, AI advisor in education and innovation, and Simon Thithy, a media and technology consultant, will weigh the opportunities of faster, more efficient content creation against fears of job losses and erosion of editorial values.
The programme also includes practical sessions to help journalists adapt. Mobile Journalism Expert Nick Garnett will lead “For Smarter Journalism: 30 Apps Every Journalist Needs”, spotlighting tools to boost productivity and creativity in reporting.
In addition, visitors will experience news production firsthand through professional bulletin simulations, giving them a rare glimpse into how technology is changing daily newsroom routines.
By centring its IGCF 2025 agenda on these issues, Sharjah Press Club underscores the urgent need to balance innovation with protecting journalism’s human touch.
