Bollywood exodus: why Anurag Kashyap, others are fleeing ‘toxic’ industry for Dubai and beyond

Anurag Kashyap, the maverick filmmaker behind Gangs of Wasseypur, has finally had enough of Bollywood’s “toxic” culture! The director has packed his bags and fled Mumbai, blasting the industry for its obsession with mega-bucks blockbusters while creativity takes a backseat.

“I’ve left Mumbai. I want to stay away from film people,” Kashyap revealed in a no-holds-barred interview with The Hindu. “The industry is all about chasing the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is dead.”

“The biggest exodus is to the Middle East, especially Dubai. Others have fled to Portugal, London, Germany, and the US. These are mainstream filmmakers I am talking about. A city is not just a structure but also its people. People here… they pull you down,” he added.

But where has Kashyap himself landed? Well, while he refused to spill the beans, sources have revealed he’s now calling Bengaluru home!

After years of struggling to carve his niche in the cutthroat world of Bollywood, Kashyap says he’s finally free. “My stress is much less, and I have left drinking,” he declared, adding that he finally has time to focus on his projects — and even his health!

And speaking of projects, Kashyap isn’t done with filmmaking just yet. He’s now gearing up to direct a Malayalam-Hindi film and a Tamil film — proving that Bollywood’s loss may just be South cinema’s gain.
