Havertz penalty wins Club World Cup final for Chelsea in Abu Dhabi

Chelsea have been crowned Fifa Club World champions for the first time after defeating Brazil’s Palmeiras in extra-time in the final in Abu Dhabi.

The European champs got the better of their South American counterparts at a packed Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium in UAE capital, prevailing 2-1 with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz.

The Premier League side took the lead in the 54th minute when striker Romelu Lukaku met Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross from the left to head clinically in the back of the net.

But Palmeiras had still had a lot of gusto drawing level 10 minutes later with Raphael Veiga’s penalty. After consultation with VAR of course.

The game then stretched into extra-time. A cagey match ensued at the capital. Chelsea were gifted a penalty when Palmeiras defender Luan blocked Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta’s shot with his arm. VAR decided to rule in the Champions League winners’ favour.

With six minutes to go to be crowned world champions, the young Kai Havertz stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the bottom corner, with the goalkeeper diving the other way.

The stadium erupted and the atmosphere was electric as Chelsea extended their club dominance by being crowned the best club in the world.
