Dubai’s new pedestrian project set to transform how residents and visitors explore the city
Big changes are coming to how you explore Dubai on foot.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially launched Phase I of the Dubai Walk Master Plan in Al Ras, and it’s not just another infrastructure project. It’s about turning everyday walks into experiences for both residents and visitors.
Imagine strolling through one of Dubai’s oldest districts on shaded pathways, stopping at art installations, grabbing a coffee, and seamlessly hopping onto public transport, all within minutes.
What this project will deliver
- 12km of new walkways and 5km of cycling tracks
- Shaded paths, seating areas, and greener spaces
- Smart wayfinding to help you explore easily
- Direct connections to metro, buses, and marine transport
Walk through a historic neighbourhood
The upgraded routes will connect some of Dubai’s most iconic heritage spots, including Al Fahidi Fort and Al Shindagha Historic District. So instead of hopping between taxis, you’ll be able to walk through Dubai’s historic quarters at your own pace.
More than sidewalks
In collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the area will feature:
- Murals and public art by local artists
- Creative lighting that brings the district to life at night
- Spaces designed for events, performances, and seasonal activities
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the project is part of a broader vision to make Dubai a “20-minute city,” where most daily needs are just a short walk away.
Dubai’s 2040 plan
- 6,000 km of walkways
- 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses
- A fully connected, pedestrian-friendly network across the city
For residents, it’s going to be easier daily commutes, healthier lifestyles, and more liveable neighbourhoods. For visitors, a more immersive, walkable experience that goes beyond malls and taxis.
