Explore Kalba’s hidden treasures: Rock art, beaches and a luxury nomad retreat await travellers

Sharjah’s eastern enclave of Kalba is quietly transforming into one of the UAE’s most exciting cultural and eco-tourism destinations. With its rugged mountains, tranquil waters and rich history, Kalba now has three new reasons for travellers to explore: the soon-to-open Kalba Rock Art Centre, a refreshed Kalba Beach, and the adventure-meets-luxury escape, Nomad.

A journey into ancient history

Due to open in 2026, the Kalba Rock Art Centre promises to transport visitors thousands of years back in time. Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the sea, the centre will showcase more than 400 petroglyphs carved into 150 rock outcrops. These engravings tell the story of the region’s earliest communities, with images of animals, stone houses, horseback riders and even scenes of copper smelting, stretching from the Neolithic era through to the 19th century.

Working alongside international experts, the Sharjah Archaeology Authority is also digitally documenting these treasures, making them accessible to researchers and curious travellers worldwide. Once completed, the centre will offer interactive exhibits, guided tours, a café and a gift shop, blending cultural learning with a modern visitor experience.

Sun, sand and eco-conscious design

A short distance away, Kalba Beach is also getting a makeover. Scheduled to open in late 2026, the 700-metre stretch will feature restaurants, cafés, kiosks, a prayer room and family-friendly play areas, all built with eco-friendly materials and designed to meet Blue Flag sustainability standards. The beach aims to balance relaxation with responsibility, offering a safe and clean coastal environment for both locals and visitors.

Adventure in the mountains

For those craving something more off-the-grid, Nomad is set to welcome guests by the end of this year. Tucked into Kalba’s mountainous terrain, this retreat features 20 luxury trailers powered by solar energy and natural materials. Guests can enjoy private barbecues under the stars, hiking and biking trails, birdwatching, yoga and even stargazing sessions. It’s designed as a space where luxury meets adventure, and where travellers can immerse themselves in nature without leaving comfort behind.

Why Kalba should be on your travel list

With these projects, Kalba is shaping up to be a destination that celebrates both heritage and sustainability. Whether you’re a history buff eager to explore rock art that dates back millennia, a family looking for a beach escape, or an adventurer drawn to mountain trails and starry skies, Kalba offers a side of the UAE that feels worlds away from the bustle of the city.
