From flag hoistings to light shows: How the UAE will celebrate Indian Independence Day

Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa will light up in the colours of the Indian flag this Friday, August 15, in a spectacular salute to 79 years of India’s independence. The dazzling display is set for 7.50pm, drawing crowds of proud expats and curious tourists alike.
The annual tricolour show has become a heart-swelling moment for millions of Indians worldwide, and here in the UAE, celebrations are going all out.
Other landmarks to join the party: Expect more UAE landmarks to glow in saffron, white and green. As always, UAE leaders are set to send warm congratulatory messages to Indian leaders and citizens.
Early morning flag hoists
With the UAE summer heat peaking, official flag hoisting ceremonies are happening earlier this year.
- Dubai: Gates open 6am, flag up at 6.30am at the Indian Consulate.
- Abu Dhabi: Event starts 7.15am at the Indian Embassy.
Top diplomats, Ambassador Sanjay Sudhir in Abu Dhabi and Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan in Dubai, will lead the ceremonies, followed by colourful cultural performances.
In Abu Dhabi, expect extras: a tribal art exhibition.
Community in action
Indian expats have already kicked off the celebrations with a mega blood donation drive in Dubai, 270 donors rolled up their sleeves, including Ashish Verma, Consul (Passport).
The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, encouraging every home to fly the Indian flag, is also in full swing. The consulate has teamed up with Glendale School in Dubai for an exhibition tracing the history of the Tiranga.
Youth group YUVA has hosted cultural shows and competitions under the theme ‘Amrit Kaal 2025’, building patriotic spirit among the younger generation.

- Sharjah Cultural Chess Club will host an Independence Day Blitz Chess Tournament in partnership with the Indian Consulate.
- Hypermarkets, restaurants and retail outlets are offering tricolour-themed deals and discounts on Indian products and cuisine.
