Hijri New Year holiday announced for UAE private sector

July 7 will be a paid holiday for private sector employees in the UAE, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) declared the holiday — which falls on a Sunday — on the occasion of Hijri New Year. On the Islamic calendar, this date translates to Muharram 1, marking the start of the new Hijri year 1446 AH.

The Islamic New Year starts with the migration, also known as the Hijrah, of Prophet Muhammad and his companions from Makkah to Medina, which took place in the year 622 AD as per the Gregorian calendar. The date is marked through astronomical calculations and moon sighting. Depending on each country, a specific committee is assigned to overlook these operations.
