How Frieze Abu Dhabi is set to reshape the UAE’s art scene

The UAE’s art world is entering a bold new chapter. Beginning in 2026, the capital’s long-running Abu Dhabi Art fair will transform into Frieze Abu Dhabi, following a landmark partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and global art powerhouse Frieze.

This isn’t just a name change; it’s a cultural shift that will redefine how the UAE connects to the international art stage. The collaboration promises to link local artists, galleries, and collectors directly with the global art market, ushering in a new era for the country’s creative ecosystem.

From local platform to global powerhouse

Since its launch in 2007, Abu Dhabi Art has been a cornerstone of the UAE’s cultural calendar, fostering regional dialogue and showcasing art from around the world. Now, by joining forces with Frieze, the brand behind world-renowned art fairs in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul, the UAE capital is poised to take its place among the world’s leading art destinations.

“Frieze Abu Dhabi is rooted in the achievements of Abu Dhabi Art and will carry them onto the global stage,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi. “It reinforces the emirate’s position as a cultural capital and a driver of dialogue, connection and creativity.”

The first Frieze Abu Dhabi, set to debut at Manarat Al Saadiyat, will bring together leading international galleries and provide unprecedented access for regional artists to curators, collectors, and global institutions.

A growing cultural ecosystem on Saadiyat Island

The timing couldn’t be more fitting. Saadiyat Island, already home to Louvre Abu Dhabi, is fast becoming one of the world’s most dynamic cultural districts. With the Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on the horizon, the arrival of Frieze adds another vital layer, transforming the island into a hub where heritage meets innovation, and where the Middle East’s creative voice resonates globally.

“Combined with the reach of Frieze’s global platform, we can showcase the UAE’s achievements while opening new opportunities for discovery and exchange,” said Simon Fox, CEO of Frieze.

Why it matters

The partnership is about more than prestige; it’s a declaration of artistic intent. Frieze Abu Dhabi will position the UAE not just as a participant in the global art dialogue but as an influencer and catalyst within it.

By bringing together emerging regional talent and international heavyweights, the fair is expected to spark collaborations, investment, and cross-cultural exchange, while deepening appreciation for contemporary art across the Arab world.

The message is clear: the UAE’s art scene is evolving, and it’s ready to take centre stage.

Abu Dhabi Art’s grand finale

Before the transformation begins, the final edition of Abu Dhabi Art in its current format will run from November 19 to 23, welcoming 140 exhibitors from around the globe. Renowned galleries such as Pace, Leila Heller, Niru Ratnam, and Athr will take part, underscoring the fair’s global appeal as it prepares to transition into a new era with Frieze Abu Dhabi in 2026.
