Improv for a kinder world: Dubai’s Courtyard Playhouse invites you to step out of the spotlight
In a world that rewards self-promotion and the loudest voice in the room, a different kind of stage is calling. At the Courtyard Playhouse this September, the spotlight is not for one, it’s for everyone.
Improvisational theatre, often mistaken for just quick-fire comedy, is at its heart an art of generosity. It’s about listening to understand, saying “Yes”, and helping others shine. As improv legend Keith Johnstone once said:
“You can’t be clever. You can’t make jokes. You must listen. You must respond. And the audience must believe you’re interested.”
This ethos, championed by Johnstone and carried forward by teachers like Patti Stiles, sees improv as a rehearsal for life itself – a practice in empathy, adaptability, and shared creativity.
That’s the philosophy behind the Courtyard Playhouse’s seasonal theme ‘Improv for a Kinder World’, which will unfold through classes, performances, and community events designed to bring people together in an age of fragmentation.
Try it for free on Saturday, August 24, from 2pm to 6pm, and get ready for the new term starting August 30. Choose from four convenient class schedules: Saturdays from August 30 (5:15pm–7:15pm), Sundays from August 31 (3:15pm–5:15pm), Tuesdays from September 2 (7:30pm–9:30pm), or Thursdays from September 4 (7:30pm–9:30pm).
All workshops take place at the Courtyard Playhouse in Al Quoz. For more details, visit www.courtyardplayhouse.com
