Interfaith complex Abrahamic Family House opens in Abu Dhabi

The UAE witnessed a historic moment on Thursday, February 16, as President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the opening of the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi. Situated in Saadiyat Island, the cultural heart of the UAE capital, it encompasses a mosque, a church, a synagogue, and a forum for learning and community engagement.

Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed said on Twitter, “The UAE has a proud history of people from diverse communities working together to create new possibilities. As the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi is inaugurated, we remain committed to harnessing the power of mutual respect, understanding and diversity to achieve shared progress.”

What is the Abrahamic Family House?
The vision for the Abrahamic Family House originated after the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb in February 2019.
The three houses of worship were named Imam Al Tayeb Mosque, St. Francis Church, and Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue after Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar; Pope Francis, Head of the Catholic Church; and Moses Ben Maimon, 12th century Jewish philosopher.
They capture the shared values between the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and serves as a powerful platform for inspiring and nurturing understanding and acceptance between people of goodwill. The faithful in all the three monotheistic religions consider Abraham to be their forefather who had made a covenant with God.
When will it open?
The compound in Saadiyat Island will be open to the public from March 1. Residents and other visitors will have to book in advance; visits will be allowed from 10 am.
The landmark will be open to all in a true reflection of the UAE’s belief in tolerance and hospitality. It will be a place for learning, dialogue, and worship. Within each house of worship, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about religious services, listen to holy scripture, and experience sacred rituals. A fourth space—not affiliated with any specific religion—will be an educational centre where all people can come together as a single community devoted to mutual understanding and peace.

The Abrahamic Family House will host a variety of programmes and events—from daily religious services to international summits.
