Planning a Jebel Hafeet barbeque party? One wrong move could cost you Dh4,000

Planning a scenic winter drive to Jebel Hafeet? Leave the grill behind. Authorities have officially banned barbecuing in several parking areas around the popular Al Ain mountain hotspot, with fines reaching Dh4,000 for repeat offenders.

Warning notices have been placed across multiple parking lots at Jebel Hafeet stating that “Barbecue/BBQ is strictly prohibited in this area, according to the Department of Municipalities and Transport and Al Ain City Municipality.

Similar signs have also been installed in non-designated areas of Green Mubazzarah Park, a popular picnic spot at the base of the mountain.

The move comes as officials step up efforts to protect the environment, preserve public spaces and maintain the area’s natural beauty, especially as visitor numbers surge during the cooler months. Jebel Hafeet attracts hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists every year, drawn by its winding mountain road, panoramic views and family-friendly attractions.

Under Abu Dhabi Law No. 2 of 2012, failing to follow warning or prohibition signs in public areas carries a fine of Dh1,000 for the first offence. This doubles to Dh2,000 for a second violation and rises to Dh4,000 for a third.

While many residents see barbecues as part of the classic Jebel Hafeet weekend experience, authorities say the restrictions are necessary due to littering, charcoal waste and safety concerns, especially in sensitive natural areas.

Similar bans have previously been enforced at deserts and public parks across the UAE to prevent environmental damage.

The timing is notable, as Al Ain was recently named the Arab Tourism Capital for 2026, highlighting the emirate’s growing focus on sustainable and responsible tourism.

However,  barbecue lovers aren’t completely out of options. Officials continue to remind residents that designated BBQ zones in approved public parks across Abu Dhabi, including Al Sulaimi and Al Mubazzarah parks, remain open for use.
