Taco Bell is making a comeback in the UAE, 14 years after the Mexican-inspired fast-food chain quietly disappeared from the country. The big question now is: where will it open, and when can UAE residents finally get their Taco Bell fix?

Americana Restaurants International has confirmed it will bring the global fast-food brand back to the UAE under an exclusive development agreement with Taco Bell UK and Europe Ltd, a subsidiary of Yum! Brands.

The UAE launch will be the first step in a wider plan to take Taco Bell across other GCC markets. However, there is one catch for hungry fans: no opening date or restaurant locations have been announced yet.

Taco Bell was here before

Taco Bell is not entirely new to the UAE. The brand first opened in Dubai in 2008, with a restaurant at The Dubai Mall. But just four years later, Taco Bell closed its UAE outlets and exited the market in 2012.

Now, more than a decade later, it is heading back,  this time with one of the region’s biggest restaurant operators behind it.

Americana already has a long-standing relationship with Yum! Brands and operates major names such as KFC and Pizza Hut across the region. Bringing Taco Bell into its portfolio also marks Americana’s move into the growing Mexican-inspired quick-service restaurant market.

Why is the brand betting on the UAE again?

The UAE has become one of the world’s biggest testing grounds for international food brands.

Dubai, in particular, has a reputation for embracing new concepts quickly,  especially brands that appeal to younger consumers looking for something fast, affordable and a little different from the usual burger-and-fries formula.

Americana chairman Mohamed Alabbar said Taco Bell’s bold personality and value-focused menu make it a good fit for young and adventurous consumers in the region.

The plan is to start in the UAE, establish the brand and then take it across the GCC.

How famous is the chain?

Taco Bell is already a global fast-food heavyweight. The chain operates more than 9,000 restaurants worldwide, including over 1,200 outlets across 40 international markets outside the US.

Its menu is known for tacos, burritos, quesadillas and other Mexican-inspired fast-food favourites.

And its return will put it in a UAE dining market that already has plenty of competition from homegrown and international Mexican restaurants.

When is it opening?

For now, that’s the mystery. Americana has confirmed the UAE launch but has not revealed when the first branch will open or where it will be located.

Until then, Taco Bell fans will have to wait a little longer.
