Sharjah launches new passenger ship to Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve
A new ship has been launched to transport both passengers and equipment to Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve, one of Sharjah’s most significant natural landmarks and a globally recognised environmental site.
The vessel, inaugurated recently, can accommodate up to 80 passengers and comes equipped with lounges and guest cabins. Measuring 140 feet in length and 30 feet in width, the ship also includes refrigeration and freezing rooms, high-efficiency power generators, and dual diesel engines producing a combined 1,440 horsepower.
Located 110 kilometres off the coast of Sharjah in the southern Arabian Gulf, Sir Bu Nair Island spans 13 square kilometres and is surrounded by clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, and a thriving marine ecosystem. The surrounding coral reefs host more than 40 coral species and 70 types of fish, including rays and the threatened black tip reef shark. The island is also a nesting ground for numerous bird species and the endangered Hawksbill turtle.
Sir Bu Nair holds four international recognitions, reflecting its environmental and ecological significance. It is included on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list, designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, part of the IOSEA network for marine turtle and habitat conservation, and listed on the IUCN Green List as one of the best-managed reserves worldwide.
The ship’s launch coincided with the Silver Jubilee edition of the Sir Bu Nair Festival, a 10-day celebration held at Al Heera Beach that honours Sharjah’s marine heritage, culture, and natural environment. The milestone event highlighted 25 years of Sharjah’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
