Step into history: Zayed National Museum opens in Abu Dhabi this December

History, culture, and innovation come together this winter as the Zayed National Museum prepares to open its doors in the Saadiyat Cultural District on December 3. The museum promises visitors an immersive journey through the UAE’s past, from ancient human activity to the modern legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation’s founding father.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said:

“As the national museum of the UAE, Zayed National Museum presents the story of our land, our people, and our heritage in a way that is alive, evolving, and open to all… History and innovation come together within the museum, creating a space where dialogue, learning, and exchange can flourish.”

What to See at the Museum

The museum houses over 3,000 artefacts, with around 1,500 on display at any given time. Its six permanent galleries, plus a temporary exhibition space and outdoor gallery, highlight everything from early human life to trade, pearling, fishing, and Emirati identity.

  • Our Beginning: Legacy and values of Sheikh Zayed
  • To Our Ancestors: Human activity from 300,000 years ago
  • Through Our Connections: Trade, communication, Arabic language, and Islam
  • By Our Coasts: Maritime history, pearling, and fishing traditions
  • To Our Roots: Emirati lifestyles, customs, and traditional practices
  • Al Masar Garden: Landscapes and flora that inspired Sheikh Zayed

Visitors can also enjoy interactive workshops, live performances, film screenings, cultural demonstrations, and ticketed or free talks throughout the year.

Architecture and Design

Designed by Foster + Partners, the building draws inspiration from a falcon’s wing in flight. Combining ancient sustainability techniques with modern technology, the museum is a statement in culturally sensitive, environmentally conscious architecture.

Dining and Accessibility

Dining options include the fine-dining Emirati restaurant Erth, Al Ghaf Cafe, and scenic Garden Cafes. The museum is also the first cultural institution in the Middle East to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme, with up to 80% of staff trained to assist visitors who need extra support.

Tickets and Visits

Tickets are now available at zayednationalmuseum.ae for Dh70, offering residents and visitors a chance to explore the UAE’s rich history in an engaging, modern setting.

The Zayed National Museum isn’t just a building; it’s a living tribute to the nation’s journey — past, present, and future.
