Suhail star to mark the end of UAE’s summer today

The eagerly anticipated time will finally arrive tonight when the Suhail star, also known as the “Star of Yemen,” will appear over the southeast horizon of the United Arab Emirates and central Arabia. Recently, temperatures have been dropping all around the nation. Over several areas of the UAE, there have also been reports of heavy rain and hail. The Arabian Peninsula’s weather will change with the rising of the star, therefore Dubai residents should prepare to wave goodbye to their summers.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society and a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, confirmed the date in a recent tweet. The star will appear in the early hours of twilight on August 24, over the southeastern horizon of the UAE and central Arabia, according to Al Jarwan.

Over many centuries, astronomers observed that the appearance of the Suhail star coincided with a fall in temperature by a few degrees.
An increase in humidity and strengthening of southeasterly winds, which tend to blow towards the Hajar Mountains in Oman and the east coast of the UAE, was also observed. The fact is this star is rising also portends that temperatures will gradually drop as we approach the winter. The length of the day grows shorter, lengthening the night. Around October 2, according to astronomers, the day and night will be equal after roughly 45 days as the atmosphere progressively enters an equinox period. The ascent of the Suhail star is significant from a historical and cultural perspective in the region. It’s appearance in Emirati culture represented abundance, therefore many farmers, pearl hunters, and fishers centred their operations on its presence.
For hunters travelling through the desert, the rising of the Suhail star marks the start of the hunting season. Suhail star was also used by the ancient Arabs as a navigational aid while travelling south, such as when travelling to the Islamic Holy City of Mecca for prayer rituals, despite the fact that it is not actually the southern star.
The start of the agricultural season coincides with the appearance of the Suhail star in the sky. Farmers plant the earliest seeds to ensure a plentiful harvest by utilising the chilly climate and fertile surroundings. The beginning of the fishing season coincides with the rising of the star because fish start to return to the coast in huge numbers when the ocean temperature drops
