Travel alert: Emirates advises travellers to reach early amid flight delays and staff shortages
If you’re flying out of the US on Emirates anytime soon, pack your patience and plan.
The Dubai-based airline has advised all passengers departing from its 11 American gateways, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Miami, to arrive at least four hours before departure due to extended security screening times at US airports.
In an advisory issued to travellers, Emirates said: “Customers departing from any of Emirates’ U.S. gateways are advised to arrive at the airport at least four hours prior to their scheduled flight departure due to extended security screening times.”
The alert comes as the US government shutdown enters its 41st day, creating ripple effects across the country’s aviation network. Air traffic controllers, working without pay, are reportedly exhausted, with staffing shortages forcing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to cut domestic flights by up to 10%.
According to FlightAware, over 3,300 flights were cancelled and 10,000 were delayed on Sunday alone, leaving travellers stranded and airports overwhelmed.
To stay ahead of the chaos, Emirates passengers are urged to check flight status updates and confirm contact details through the Manage Your Booking section on its website. Those using chauffeur-drive services will be contacted directly in case of any schedule changes.
US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy warned that air travel could “slow to a trickle” as the country heads into the Thanksgiving rush on November 27, typically one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.
So if you’re heading to the airport, skip the last-minute coffee run and get there early. You’ll need the extra time.
