Travel through time: Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Quantum Dome offers a must-visit VR experience
If you’re visiting Abu Dhabi and looking for an experience that blends art, culture, and cutting-edge technology, the Quantum Dome Project at Louvre Abu Dhabi should be at the top of your list.
Now open to the public and running for a full year, this all-new immersive VR attraction invites you to journey through time inside one of the world’s most iconic museums. Housed in the museum’s Lower Forum, the Quantum Dome transforms traditional gallery visits into a cinematic, full-body, digital adventure, one where you don’t just view history, you walk through it.
Up to 10 guests at a time can strap in for a 25-minute sci-fi-inspired mission, guided by a compelling narrative and equipped with wireless motion-tracking gear. Inside, you’ll move freely through walkable, vivid environments that digitally bring to life centuries-old artefacts from the museum’s permanent collection.
Your journey includes three stunning historical reconstructions:
- Ancient Rome, where you’ll wander the majestic colonnades of the Augustus Forum and come face to face with the might of the empire through The Portrait of Emperor Augustus (1st century CE).
- Medieval Baghdad, where a 13th-century manuscript page from De Materia Medica becomes your gateway to the House of Wisdom, a hub of scholarly brilliance, medical knowledge, and cosmic exploration.
- Mughal India, where the ornate Four Mirror Armour transports you to the serene waters by the Jal Mahal, immersing you in the regal elegance of the Mughal court.
Unlike typical museum tours, this experience isn’t solo. As you move through virtual time, you’ll see and interact with fellow explorers in real-time, making it a social, shared memory just as much as a personal discovery.
Available in Arabic, English, and French, and open to visitors aged eight and above, the Quantum Dome Project is ideal for families, solo travellers, students, tech enthusiasts, and culture lovers alike.
According to Marine Botton, Interpretation and Creative Content Senior Officer at Louvre Abu Dhabi, “This project is an extension of our mission to connect cultures and communities through meaningful, innovative experiences. It allows visitors to engage with history not as distant observers, but as active participants.”
Created in collaboration with France’s Small Creative Studio, the experience is another testament to the museum’s growing role as a hub for global storytelling, where past and future blend in extraordinary ways.
So if you’re planning your cultural itinerary in the UAE, make sure to leave time to enter the dome where history breathes, stories unfold, and the ancient world is just a headset away.
