Travelling to China from the UAE? Here’s your guide to the new online visa process

Applying for a visa to China from the UAE has become easier and more efficient with the rollout of new online application systems by both the Chinese Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Chinese Consulate in Dubai.

The Chinese Embassy launched its digital visa application service on June 30, while the Chinese Consulate General in Dubai followed suit this Monday. The move marks a major shift toward digitalisation, streamlining what was once a paper-heavy process for travellers.

Step-by-Step Guide: Applying for a Chinese Visa in Dubai

The CVASC has detailed a three-step process for new applicants under the digital system:

1. Online Application

  • Visit www.consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/ and log in or create an account, selecting Dubai as your application location.
  • Fill in the visa application form, upload a clear scan of your passport, a passport-sized photo, and all supporting documents.
  • Submit the form online. Once reviewed, you will receive an email with a “Visa Application Certificate” if approved, or feedback if changes are needed.

2. In-Person Submission

  • After receiving the Visa Application Certificate, applicants must visit the CVASC Dubai in person—no appointment required—with printed copies of all documents.
  • Bring the original passport(s), two printed photos, any required previous Chinese passports (for former Chinese nationals), and all supporting documents.
  • Fingerprints will be collected unless exempt (under 14, over 70, diplomatic passports, or certain short-term visas until December 31, 2025).
  • Pay the visa and service fees via cash or card.

3. Passport Collection

  • The standard processing time is four working days.
  • Applicants must present the original pick-up form to collect their passports during CVASC working hours.

Important Travel Advisory

Officials strongly advise applicants to apply at least one month before their intended travel date and not to purchase flight tickets before receiving visa approval. Any financial losses due to delays or rejection will be the applicant’s responsibility.

This updated digital process replaces the previously manual and in-person-heavy procedures that included printing forms, compiling documents, and booking appointments. The aim is to improve efficiency, reduce queues, and simplify travel planning for UAE-based applicants.

For complete guidelines, residents are encouraged to visit the official websites of the Chinese Embassy, Chinese Consulate, or the China Visa Application Service Centre.
