UAE mosques to offer special Friday prayers for earthquake victims

Mosques in the UAE will hold absentee funeral prayers on Friday for the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. This comes following the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The funeral prayers will be held after the Friday prayer.

In Islam, absentee funeral prayers, known as Salat al-Gha’ib, are performed by Muslims who are not physically present for the burial prayer, known as Salat al-Dafnah. The death toll from a huge earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria climbed to more than 17,500 on Thursday, as hopes faded of finding survivors stuck under rubble in freezing weather.
