UAE to host first international professional sumo event this September

The UAE is set to host its first-ever international professional sumo exhibition when the All-Star Sumo Competition comes to Space42 Arena on September 26.

The event will feature nine elite rikishi competing in 36 bouts, giving fans a rare opportunity to experience one of Japan’s oldest sporting traditions live.

International line-up

The competition brings together top sumo wrestlers from Japan, Mongolia and Egypt, including champions with world titles and Emperor’s Cup honours.

Leading the line-up is Ichi from Japan, an Emperor’s Cup winner, one of the sport’s highest achievements.

He will be joined by:

  • Hiroki (Japan), one of the largest active professional sumo wrestlers.
  • Ramy El-Gazar (Egypt), an internationally acclaimed sumo champion.
  • Mendee (Mongolia), a former World Junior Sumo Champion and International Sumo Champion.

Additional professional rikishi from Japan and Mongolia will also compete.

More than just wrestling

Alongside the matches, spectators will witness traditional sumo ceremonies, including the ring-entering procession and pre-bout rituals that have been part of the sport for centuries.

“Sumo is rarely experienced live outside Japan,” said Mohamad Yehya, General Manager of Space42 Arena. “Watching it in person offers a completely different appreciation of the sport, its traditions and the respect shown by the athletes.”

The event is being organised in collaboration with USA Sumo to ensure authentic competition standards and traditional presentation.
