Dubai invites artists to reimagine city tunnels with bold new designs

Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are inviting Emirati and UAE-based creatives to help transform more than 40 road tunnels across the city into permanent public art spaces.

Part of the wider Dubai Tunnels Initiative, the project aims to turn everyday infrastructure into immersive cultural experiences, bringing art directly into residents’ daily commutes.

Aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the initiative reimagines tunnel walls as large-scale creative canvases that reflect the city’s identity, diversity and future-focused vision.

The open call is open to artists, designers and architects living in the UAE, with organisers specifically encouraging locally rooted talent to submit original concepts that have never been exhibited before.

Applicants are being asked to create bold, visually striking designs suited to fast-moving tunnel environments, with a focus on colour, simplicity and durability. Ceramic tile systems are being prioritised due to their ability to withstand Dubai’s climate while maintaining colour quality over time.

The initiative builds on the success of earlier phases, which gained strong public attention for transforming ordinary road infrastructure into visually engaging urban landmarks.

Officials say the project is about more than beautification. It reflects Dubai’s broader ambition to integrate culture into daily life, moving art beyond galleries and cultural districts into spaces people interact with every day.

Submissions officially opened on May 11, with applications closing on June 15, 2026.

Interested creatives can access full guidelines and registration details through the official Dubai Culture & Arts Authority website.
