Dubai’s next superfood? Joha rice brings aroma, taste and wellness

A healthy new addition is coming to UAE kitchens. One of the most cherished grains from Assam, India, Joha rice has officially made its international debut, with a 10-tonne consignment shipped to Dubai, marking a major milestone for India’s agri-exports and health food scene.
Flagged off on Sunday from Demow in Assam’s Sivasagar district by State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, the export highlights growing global interest in nutrient-rich, aromatic rice varieties that go beyond the ordinary.
Why Joha Rice Deserves a Spot in Your Pantry
Grown traditionally by farmers in Nitaipukhuri and Demow, Joha rice is beloved in Assamese cuisine for its distinct aroma, delicate taste, and soft texture. But there’s more, it’s also being recognised as a functional superfood.
Health benefits:
Low glycemic index makes it good for blood sugar control
Rich in antioxidants, it helps fight inflammation
High oryzanol content may reduce cholesterol and support heart health
Natural source of vitamins and protein
High levels of acetyl and pyrroline give it a sweet fragrance.
It also has more multivitamins than some other types of rice.
The presence of polyphenols and flavonoids helps kill free radicals and fights ageing
It contains amino acids or proteins that serve as a substitute and plant-based protein for vegetarians
How This Rice Can Be Used
Often used in traditional Assamese dishes like Pitha (pancake), Payokh (pudding) and Jolpan (snacks), Joha rice is now gaining traction on the global stage, not just for its flavour, but for its impressive wellness benefits.
Joha rice can be used for making fragrant pulao, and sweet dishes like kheer (rice pudding). It can also be consumed as boiled or seasoned with spices for that extra zing.
A Win for Farmers and Health-Conscious Foodies
“This export is not just about trade, it’s about global recognition for Assam’s farming heritage,” said Minister Hazarika. With strong demand from Dubai’s health-conscious market and a large Indian diaspora, farmers are hopeful for better income and international exposure.
Now Available in the UAE
Joha rice is currently available online in Dubai on Dubuy or Amazon.ae for about Dh3.16 per kg.
