Hunter Supermoon to light up UAE skies on October 9: Best spots to watch

UAE stargazers are in for a celestial treat as the dazzling Hunter Supermoon rises over the country’s skies on Thursday, October 9.

It’s the first of three spectacular supermoon events set to close out 2025, promising a magical night for moon-watchers across the Emirates.

What Makes the Hunter Supermoon Special

The Hunter’s Moon, rooted in ancient tradition as the post-harvest moon that guided hunters during autumn nights, will appear 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than a typical full moon.
This extra-bright glow happens because the moon will reach perigee, its closest point to Earth, on the same night as the full moon.

“It’s a fantastic chance for everyone to see the moon at its brightest and biggest,” said Dubai Astronomy Group, which will host a special public viewing event at the University of Dubai, offering expert talks and telescopes for the clearest view.

Top Spots in the UAE to Catch the Supermoon

1. Al Barsha Pond Park, Dubai
A family-friendly urban spot with lawns, walking paths, and late opening hours, perfect for an evening moonlit stroll.
Open Sat–Wed 8am–11pm, Thu–Fri until 11.30pm.

Al Qudra Lakes, Dubai
Head into the desert for minimal light pollution and serene night-sky views. Great for a camping-style picnic or a quick bite at nearby Last Exit Al Qudra.
Open 24/7 | 4×4 vehicle recommended.

3. Hatta, Dubai
Drive into the foothills of the Hajar Mountains for clearer skies. Perfect for those who don’t mind venturing further from the city — camping options available.
A 2-hour drive from Dubai.

4. Jebel Ali Beach, Dubai
Pack a picnic and settle by the shore for a stunning moonrise over the water. Parking is available nearby.
Open 24/7.

5. Kite Beach, Dubai
A lively beachfront with easy access to cafés and restaurants that stay open until midnight, perfect for late-night stargazing.
Open 24/7.

6. The Viewing Point, Dubai Creek Harbour
A 70-metre waterfront walkway with panoramic views of Dubai Creek and the Burj Khalifa skyline — a photogenic backdrop for moon-watching.
Open 24/7.

7. Al Quaa Milky Way Spot, Abu Dhabi
A remote desert haven for serious stargazers. Located 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city, en route to Al Ain, it offers some of the clearest night skies in the UAE.
Open 24/7 | 4×4 vehicle required.

Tips for Moon-Gazers

  • Arrive early: Secure a good viewing spot before moonrise.
  • Use a tripod: For the best photos, keep your camera steady.
  • Check the weather: Clear skies are key for an unobstructed view.
  • Pack snacks & water: Especially if you’re heading to remote spots.

This Hunter Supermoon of October 9 marks the start of an exciting supermoon season for UAE sky-watchers, with two more big lunar events set to follow in November and December. Whether you join the Dubai Astronomy Group’s public viewing or venture into the desert, this is one celestial spectacle you won’t want to miss.
