No social media for under-15s: UAE announces new ban

The United Arab Emirates has introduced new rules restricting children’s access to social media, as part of efforts to create a safer digital environment for young users.

Under a resolution approved by the UAE Cabinet,  chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, children under the age of 15 will no longer be allowed to create or use personal social media accounts, or access the full range of features offered by these platforms.

The move comes amid growing concerns about the impact of excessive social media use on children. A 2024 survey found that children in the UAE spend an average of three hours a day on social media platforms.

Experts have warned that prolonged exposure to social media can contribute to a range of challenges, including anxiety, attention difficulties, declining academic performance and, in some cases, speech delays.

The UAE joins a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Malaysia, that have introduced measures to regulate children’s access to social media.

Under the new regulations, teenagers aged 15 and 16 will be permitted to use social media platforms, but under enhanced safeguards. These include age-appropriate content restrictions, limits on interactions with unknown users, controls on screen time and usage duration, and parental supervision tools.

Social media companies operating in the UAE will have up to 12 months to gradually implement the new requirements in coordination with relevant authorities.
