UAE is second country globally to approve this once-daily weight loss pill
The UAE has taken another significant step in advancing healthcare innovation by approving an oral version of Wegovy (semaglutide), a treatment designed to support long-term weight management in adults living with obesity or those who are overweight and affected by weight-related health conditions.
The approval, announced by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) on Monday, positions the UAE as only the second country in the world to authorise the once-daily tablet, highlighting the nation’s growing role in accelerating access to cutting-edge medical treatments.
This medication belongs to a class of treatments known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, helping eligible patients achieve sustained weight loss while maintaining long-term results.
Health authorities said the decision was supported by clinical evidence demonstrating the treatment’s effectiveness in reducing body weight and supporting weight maintenance. Studies also showed that semaglutide can help lower the risk of major cardiovascular events among high-risk patients, including heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular-related deaths.
The latest approval builds on the UAE’s earlier authorisation of the injectable version of Wegovy, offering patients an additional treatment option that may be more convenient for those seeking a non-injectable alternative.
Dr Fatma Al Kaabi, Director General of the Emirates Drug Establishment, noted that obesity remains one of the leading contributors to chronic diseases and stressed the importance of providing patients with access to innovative therapies that meet internationally recognised scientific and regulatory standards.
The Emirates Drug Establishment added that the approval aligns with ongoing national efforts to increase awareness about early obesity management and reduce the long-term health complications associated with excess weight.
