UAE travel: Tourists can now open instant bank accounts on arrival

Tourists arriving in the UAE will soon be able to open a bank account within minutes, thanks to a new initiative launched by the Central Bank of the UAE in partnership with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank.

The new Tourist Identity scheme introduces a fully digital onboarding process, allowing visitors to access banking services instantly upon arrival, without the need for paperwork or traditional documentation.

Using facial recognition and biometric technology, travellers are issued a secure digital identity at entry. This can then be linked to a mobile banking app, enabling them to open an account, receive a digital debit card, and start making payments right away.

The initiative is designed to reduce reliance on cash and make it easier for visitors to pay, transfer money, and manage expenses seamlessly during their stay.

Tourists will also be able to connect to the UAE’s wider payment ecosystem, including Jaywan and Aani, supporting the country’s push towards a cashless, digital-first economy.

Officials say the system is powered by advanced biometric verification and artificial intelligence, enabling secure access to services across sectors without needing physical documents.

Safer transactions for visitors

For tourists, especially business travellers and long-stay visitors, the move means faster, safer, and more convenient access to money, eliminating the need to rely on cash or foreign cards. It also enhances the overall travel experience.
