Why the UAE will see two full moons this month

Skywatchers across the UAE are in for a special treat this month, as May will feature two full moons, a phenomenon commonly known as a Blue Moon.

According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan of the Emirates Astronomical Society, the first full moon appeared on Saturday, and this will be followed by a second one on May 31.

While the name may sound unusual, the event is more about timing than rarity. The lunar cycle lasts around 29.5 days, which means when a full moon occurs early in a 31-day month like May, a second one can appear before the month ends.

Despite being called a Blue Moon, the moon itself won’t change colour. It will look just like any other full moon, bright, clear, and familiar, with the name simply referring to the second full moon in a single calendar month.

What it means for residents

For UAE residents, the event offers a great opportunity for casual stargazing, especially with the country’s typically clear skies. The best time to watch is just after sunset at moonrise, when the moon appears larger and more striking on the horizon.

With binoculars or a small telescope, viewers can also spot craters and surface details, making it a simple but memorable outdoor activity for families and astronomy enthusiasts alike.

While a Blue Moon occurs every two to three years, it remains a moment worth catching, adding a little extra magic to the UAE night sky this May.

For best views, head to:

  • Al Qudra Desert – popular for night sky watching and easy access
  • Jebel Jais – higher altitude for clearer, cooler views
  • Liwa Desert – minimal light pollution, ideal for stargazing
  • Al Quaa Milky Way Spot – one of the darkest spots in the country

Stargazing tips

  • Go just after sunset: Moonrise offers the most dramatic views
  • Avoid city lights: Darker areas mean better visibility
  • Use binoculars: Even basic ones reveal craters and surface details
  • Check the weather: Clear skies make all the difference
  • Bring a mat or chair: You’ll want to sit back and enjoy it
