Etihad Rail update: UAE-Oman travel time cut to 47mins

Oman-Etihad Rail Company has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company for the development of a UAE-Oman rail link. Oman-Etihad Rail Company is a joint venture (JV) of Oman Rail and Etihad Rail. Its mandate is to oversee the 303 kilometre project. The overall investment value of the UAE-Oman rail link is $3 billion.

It will reduce journey times between Abu Dhabi and Sohar, to the north of Muscat, to 100 minutes, and trips from Sohar to Al Ain to 47 minutes. The transport link includes connecting the UAE’s existing freight services line to Sohar, the sultanate’s deep-sea port. The co-operation agreement with Mubadala will involve the formation of working groups and joint committees to share knowledge and expertise and deliver economic and financial feasibility studies, in addition to joint investments in the development of the network. Passenger and freight lines will be developed as part of the network. Passenger service speeds on the UAE-Oman rail link will be around 200 kilometres per hour (kmph), while freight service speeds will be 120kmph.
