Going on holiday? Here’s how to avoid a Dh500 fine for leaving your car in Dubai

If you’re travelling abroad this summer, don’t forget to make arrangements for your car before you leave.

Dubai Municipality has reminded residents that vehicles left unattended in public areas for long periods could be classified as abandoned, resulting in a Dh500 fine, towing charges and impound fees.

Here’s what motorists need to know.

Why is Dubai Municipality issuing this warning?

During the summer holiday season, many residents travel overseas for several weeks, leaving their vehicles parked for extended periods.

According to Dubai Municipality, abandoned or poorly maintained vehicles can:

  • Affect the city’s appearance.
  • Occupy public parking spaces unnecessarily.
  • Create environmental and public safety concerns.
  • Reduce the overall cleanliness and organisation of neighbourhoods.

The municipality says keeping public spaces clean is a shared responsibility between authorities and residents.

How to avoid your car being considered abandoned

Dubai Municipality recommends taking these five steps before leaving for your holiday:

1. Park in a safe, designated location

Avoid leaving your vehicle in:

  • Empty plots
  • Sandy areas
  • Isolated locations
  • Vacant public spaces

Instead, choose secure and designated parking areas.

2. Arrange regular cleaning

Dust and sand can quickly accumulate during the summer months.

If you’re travelling for several weeks, ask a family member, friend or professional service to clean your vehicle periodically to prevent it from appearing abandoned.

3. Keep your vehicle well maintained

Before leaving, check:

  • Tyre pressure
  • Battery condition
  • Fluid levels
  • Overall mechanical condition

A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to develop problems while parked.

4. Use a car cover

A quality protective cover helps shield your vehicle from:

  • Dust
  • Sand
  • Intense sunlight
  • High summer temperatures

5. Avoid leaving it unchecked for long periods

If possible, arrange for someone you trust to inspect or move the vehicle occasionally while you’re away.

What happens if your car is reported?

Dubai Municipality carries out inspections throughout the year to identify abandoned vehicles across:

  • Public roads
  • Parking areas
  • Open sandy spaces

If your vehicle appears abandoned:

  1. Inspectors document the vehicle.
  2. A warning notice is issued.
  3. Owners of Dubai-registered vehicles receive an SMS notification using RTA records.
  4. The warning period ranges from 3 to 15 days, depending on the vehicle’s condition and location.

What if you don’t move the vehicle?

If no action is taken before the warning period expires:

  • The vehicle is towed.
  • It is transferred to the Al Awir impound yard.
  • Owners must pay a Dh500 fine, along with towing and storage charges.

Additional fees may apply depending on:

  • Vehicle size and weight.
  • Length of time in storage.
  • Whether specialised recovery equipment is required.

Pool safety reminder for families

Dubai Municipality has also issued safety advice for residents using home swimming pools during the school holidays.

Parents are encouraged to:

  • Supervise children at all times.
  • Avoid distractions such as mobile phones.
  • Install safety barriers around pools.
  • Prevent running, diving and rough play.
  • Check pool maintenance and water quality regularly.
  • Keep children away from drainage and suction outlets.
  • Ensure an emergency shut-off switch is easily accessible.

Taking a few simple precautions before heading on holiday can help residents avoid unnecessary fines, towing costs and vehicle damage. At the same time, following Dubai Municipality’s guidance helps keep neighbourhoods clean, organised and safe for everyone throughout the busy summer travel season.
