WhatsApp to let users chat without sharing phone numbers
WhatsApp is introducing one of its biggest privacy updates yet; users will soon be able to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers.
The new feature, announced by Meta, is designed to give users more control over their privacy, especially when chatting with someone for the first time or joining large group conversations.
How will it work?
Instead of giving out your phone number, you’ll be able to create a unique WhatsApp username that others can use to find and message you.
According to Meta, there won’t be a public directory or searchable list of usernames. Anyone who wants to contact you will need to know your exact username.
Why is WhatsApp making this change?
The update aims to better protect users’ personal information by reducing the need to share phone numbers with strangers, businesses or large groups.
It’s a feature many users have long requested and brings WhatsApp closer to messaging platforms like Telegram and Signal, where usernames can be used instead of phone numbers.
When will usernames be available?
Meta says the feature will roll out gradually to users worldwide over the coming months. You’ll receive a notification in WhatsApp once usernames become available in your region.
The company also confirmed that creators, businesses and organisations will be able to reserve usernames that match their existing Facebook or Instagram handles, making it easier for people to find and verify them across Meta’s platforms.
